The Adventure Begins!

We rolled out of Mustang around 6:15 this morning, stopped in Dodge City, Kansas to pick up Raymond Stroud (and eat some fresh rhubarb coffee cake and eggs, thanks Robin!), then took back roads north to I-70 and headed west. The BMW began the journey at 14,761, the Drifter at 8,179 miles on the odometer.

We hit a large storm just west of Limon that included quarter-sized hail which piled up until it looked like Christmas. There were no awnings or overpasses so we ended up crouched behind the bikes on the shoulder until the hail subsided and melted off the roadway. We ended up soaked, so we sat at a fuel stop for a couple of hours while we changed clothes and the remainder of the storms passed. Reminded me of a clothes explosion at a Western Sizzlin with Rick at Shreveport in 1986... not good, but quite memorable. Next time, the coat, pants, and liner BEFORE the weather threatens.

Temps were in the mid 80's most of the day, but dropped into the 70's as we approached Colorado. It dropped an additional 25 degrees as we passed through the storm (low 50's).

We arrived in Fort Collins around 8:30 this evening and grabbed a quick Pepper Bob at the Charcoal Broiler next door to our hotel. Christopher made a rule for this trip of NO restaurant chains, only local cuisine. We're off to a good start. More stories and photos when there's time. We managed a bit over 720 miles today.
